Relic guitars are made to look worn, scratched, chipped and tattered even though they’re brand new. A relic finish, otherwise known as an ageing or distressing process, varies in outcome like any other hand-designed guitar feature.
When did Fender start making relic guitars?

Fender finds a relic. Early in 1995 when Fender showed off a few early samples of its new guitars with aged finishes at the NAMM gear show in Anaheim, some of the repairers who wandered by must have wondered what all the fuss was about.
Why are relic guitars so expensive?
It’s all about supply and demand. This is no different than a blue jean company charging more for a pair of worn out faded jeans than they charge for a regular pair, just because they can. This case has another twist. Many people don’t want to look like a newbie with a shiny new guitar.
