What is a Ringland failure?

What is a Ringland failure?

Ringland failure is when excessive heat and pressure cause the ringland to fracture. The fractured ringland no longer supports the ring properly which allows combustion gasses to blow down into the sump, often pressurizing it.

What causes Ringland failure?

For those who don’t know a ringland failure is usually as simple as a crack in the part of the piston that your piston rings “sit” on. This in turn causes a loss in compression in that cylinder with symptoms of misfiring, smoking etc.

What does Ringland failure sound like?

2. Knocking Sounds Coming from the Fuel Tank. Another sign that you have an issue with the ringland on your Subaru is that a detonation-like sound starts to come from the area surrounding your fuel tank. This is caused by the dilution of your fuel supply.

How do you prevent Ringland failure?

Here are a few tips to avoid piston failure, & make sure you don’t turn your Subaru pistons into a set of paperweights

  1. Reason #1 – The factory tune is junk.
  2. Reason #2 – Blow by.
  3. Reason #3 – Over-driven engines.
  4. Reason #4 – Weak pistons in heavily modded engines.
  5. Reason #5 – Combustion heat.

What is the Subie rumble?

This means that the exhaust gas coming off the engine has to move different lengths, and the sound produced does as well. The sound is unevenly spaced in the exhaust and it exits the car as such.

What part of piston is Ringland?

Ring land. This is the area on the side of the piston from the crown to the top piston ring and then the material between the rings on the piston’s side. The ring land from the top ring to the crown is also identified as a crevice volume. It is a region where the air/fuel mixture will travel to, but the flame will not.

Do forged pistons add power?

It is true that forged pistons are heavier than cast pistons, but this is counteracted by the ability to provide a high compression ratio inside the engine, enabling the engine to rev higher and produce more power.

Are STI pistons forged?

AFAIK no model STI has had forged internals.

Why does the WRX sound so good?

The Subaru boxer is of the horizontally-opposed flat design. That’s only part of what gives it that unique sound, however, as it’s more about the design of the headers. The 2.5-liter Subaru engine makes use of something called unequal length headers, which are exactly what they sound like.
