What is a Vélib in Paris?
Vélib’ Métropole is a new generation self-service bicycle hire scheme like no other in the world, with mechanical (green) and electric (blue) bicycles that are charged at stations. In 2021, the service will operate 24 hours a day in approximately 60 locations of the Greater Paris area.
How do you get a Vélib in Paris?
Walk up to any Velib’ Station and follow the steps on the screen, which are as follows:
- Click 1 to buy a ticket.
- Create a 4-digit pin.
- You will be asked to accept a 150€ deposit in case the bike is not returned.
- Insert your credit/debit card. Your card must have a chip and pin in order to work.
- Collect printed receipt.

How do you use Vélib with a credit card?
Simply swipe your credit card at one the of the Vélib stations and select your option. Your card will be charged a deposit of 150€, but this is returned – providing you don’t write off the bike, of course. After following the instructions on the machine, you can choose your bike on screen.
