What is an XYZ material?
Xyz Materials (pronounced ik-seez) (Japanese: Ｘ エクシーズ 素 そ 材 ざい Ekushīzu Sozai, エクシーズ 素 そ 材 ざい in card text before Duelist Alliance), are cards stacked underneath an Xyz Monster.
Can you use XYZ as material?
Token Monsters cannot be used as Xyz Materials. Monsters that do not have Levels (such as Xyz Monsters and Link Monsters) cannot be used as Xyz Materials unless specifically permitted (such as by “Number S0: Utopic ZEXAL”).
What does detaching XYZ material mean?
When an Xyz Material is detached, it is not treated as leaving the field, since Xyz Materials are not treated as being on the field; as such, the effects of monsters like “Sangan” and the conditions of monsters like “Plaguespreader Zombie” are not applied.

Just like Synchro Monsters, Xyz Monsters have their own type of Summon that you perform when you want to play them. Here’s how Xyz Summons work: When you control 2 face-up monsters with the same Level, put them on top of each other, then put the appropriate Xyz Monster on top of them. That’s an Xyz Summon!
Can you reattach XYZ material?
Even when attaching Xyz Materials with a card effect, Xyz Materials can only be attached to Xyz Monsters (e.g. “Phantom of Chaos” that has copied the effect of “Number C101: Silent Honor DARK” cannot activate the effect to attach a card as an Xyz Material).
