How do I know which piston ring goes where?
Always check for the dot. Rings with a groove in the outside diameter and a “pip” mark or dot on the side must be installed with the groove toward the bottom of the piston and pip mark towards the top of the piston.

The general rule is that bevels go down and dots/top marks go up. Note, that the word “TOP” does not mean that this is a top ring! But rather, that side of the ring should face the top of the engine.
Does piston ring direction matter?
Pistons can only be installed one way. Arrows pointing toward the exhaust, which will face the ring pins toward the intake. Pin retaining clips need to be installed with the gap facing straight up or straight down, not sideways in either direction.
What happens if piston rings are installed upside down?
The gas pressure on the back side of the ring helps seal it against the wall. It won’t work if the ring is installed upside down. The second ring is usually the same as the top ring. It won’t work properly if you mix them up.
What could result from incorrectly installed piston rings?
High Crankcase Pressure Caused by Rings Not Installed Correctly. Again, proper installation is key to successfully operating piston rings. Rings not installed correctly allow a combustion path to the crankcase, causing high crankcase pressure— “blow by”—and loss of power.
What should the compression be on a 295 Robin engine?
The ideal Robin 295 robin engine compression should be around 120 to 150 PSI or sometimes slightly higher. Many times it happens that the compression drops to 70, 80, or even less psi.
