How does the Knox Box work?
It starts with the Knox Master Key. Using one key, the Knox Rapid Access System removes barriers to entry when first responders respond to an emergency call. The Knox Master Key enables immediate entry to secured perimeters, gates, buildings, and commercial properties.

What is a fire knock box?
A Knox Box is a small, wall-mounted safe that holds building keys for fire departments, emergency medical services, and sometimes police to retrieve in emergency situations.
Who needs a Knox Box?
(a) Any building that has installed within it an automatic fire suppression system, a remotely monitored automatic fire alarm system, or an elevator will need a Knox Box. (b) Any commercial building that has more than two stories will need a Knox Box.
Where should a Knox Box be mounted?
Knox strongly recommends all boxes be installed 6 feet up from the ground. A box at this height is easily accessible by most first responders without the use of a ladder.
Where do you put Knox boxes?
Always mount your Knox Residential Box to a secure, solid wall, beam or post in an area sheltered from excessive moisture. For fire department use, consult your fire department for other mounting requirements such as height and placement on the building. A six (6) foot height level is recommended to resist vandalism.
Do Knox boxes come with a key?
I did not receive a key? Property owners do not receive keys that will open their Knox Box. Any key that will open your Knox Box will also open other Knox Boxes in the City.
Do firemen have master keys?
For that reason, only the Fire Department has the master key. When your box is mounted and ready to install keys, call the non-emergency number at the Fire Department. An officer from the Fire Department will come and place the keys securely in your box.
Can you rekey a Knox Box?
If you selected an incorrect Fire Department on your order, there is a $40 rekey fee plus shipping/handling and applicable taxes.
How do you mount a Knox Box?
Knox recommends using 3/8” Grade 5 or Grade 8 fasteners and large, thick steel washers to mount the KNOX-BOX to a solid concrete wall. Mounting to a hollow surface requires use of a steel backplate as well, but in either case, the most critical mounting component is the fastener that attaches the KNOX-BOX to the wall.
How do you install a Knox Box on a brick wall?
You will need to use a concrete drill bit to start the holes if the surface of the interior wall is masonry. Align the Knox-Box over the bolt holes on the exterior side of the wall. Ask your helper to place a steel washer on each bolt and then slide the bolts through the holes on the interior side of the wall.
