Do you get paid for be the match?
Donors never pay for donating, and are never paid to donate. All medical costs for the donation procedure are covered by the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP), which operates the Be The Match Registry®, or by the patient’s medical insurance, as are travel expenses and other non-medical costs.
What are the risks of donating bone marrow?
Bone marrow donation The most serious risk associated with donating bone marrow involves the use and effects of anesthesia during surgery. After the surgery, you might feel tired or weak and have trouble walking for a few days. The area where the bone marrow was taken out might feel sore for a few days.

Does donating stem cells hurt?
Myth: Stem cell donation is painful. Fact: For bone marrow donation, the collection of stem cells is taken from the iliac crest and is done using general anesthetic so the donor does not experience pain during the donation procedure.

A patient’s likelihood of finding a matching donor on the Be The Match Registry is estimated to range from 29-79%, depending on ethnic background. Our donor and cord blood registries can only continue to grow if people like you sign up to become a member of the registry or donate your baby’s umbilical cord blood.
