What is a push rod bearing?
The pushrod transfers the forces from camshaft to the valve. It is made of steel or cast iron. The working surface of the pushrod is subjected to hardening and grinding to increase their durability.
What does a bent push rod mean?
When there is excessive stud or rocker arm ball wear, it’ll cause the rocker arm to slide sideways, as a result, leads to a bent pushrod.
What causes push rod failure?
The two most common causes of this failure are; Bad fuel (I have seen bad fuel cause momentary valve stick in large and small engines causing rocker arms to fall out between cam and valve or bent push rods.) Bad fuel can leave sticky deposit on intake valve.
What are push rods made of?
The stock pushrods are solid aluminum with steel ends, and are almost guaranteed to flex at low and moderate RPM. ( The pressed on ends have also been known to come loose… yuck. ) Pushrod flex reduces valve lift and can also lead to cam and tappet damage.
What are rocker arms made of?
Rocker arms in automobiles are typically made from stamped steel, or aluminum in higher-revving applications. Some rocker arms (called roller rockers) include a bearing at the contact point, to reduce wear and friction at the contact point.
What materials can the push rods be made from?
Why is it called a spun bearing?
A spun bearing is one that welds itself to the crankshaft and spins in its housing. This means oil starvation for that journal and a shower of metal shavings flying through the oil system at best. This is if it’s just a rod bearing.
What causes a broken push rod?

This is NOT for cost reasons. The Intake valve on Intek and the Exhaust valve on V twin Vanguards. Several have used steel as replacement with no apparent problem.
